Building a Studio

pexels-photo-164938Wow, just the thought of it is daunting. Not just for the massive amount of cash one requires for such an undertking, but also the logistics and set-up. I am very lucky that my friend (and ace producer) Nick is going to help me. This will be a multi purpose space, used not only by myself but also my kid, the talanted musician Liam Cloud. Vj baby k will also be busy editing visuals here. Keep your eyes open for her crazy stuff.

I have always wanted a space to create music and it is actually the only logical next step. I certainly have enough tunes in my head to keep me busy for quite some time. The drama has always been money and head-space, of which there is never enough.

apollo_twin_carousel_1But where in the hell do you start, right? I mean I suppose one could try the ‘trial and error’ method, but you would need a ton of time and bags of cash. I, as I mentioned before, am lucky enough to have guidence from the artist known as Mechanimal.

The wish list of what to buy is huge, limited I suppose only by wallet girth. But the first piece of kit I am getting is the Apollo Twin soundcard. Apollo make great stuff that range in between 500 and 2500 Euros, but this little baby will do what I need and registers at only around 900 Euros. It also has inputs for guitars and mics, solving the ‘how do you record rock music’ question straight away.

I’ll be posting about a lot of the stuff that I’ll be getting for this studio, so if it helps anyone in any way, that’s great. After all, I’m not doing this alone. Your soudcard (and monitors) are really important, so don’t skimp

Been a while…

16836076_10212672635596228_2508038325001866122_oWell it certainly has been a while since I spent any time promoting this page. But then again, I had not been playing out and about all that much due to several brain operations and a bit of drama walking in a straight line (which can still present a few problems after wine). That and the fact that I forgot my own login to pan.dj. I suppose I should have just asked Kristina (the lovely vj baby K) which is what I finally ended up doing.

But hey, enough about the past, get ready for the future. I am 100% back and ready to make people dance like no one’s watching. Just last weekend I played the 3-4:30 set (ok it went on till about 5 due to reasons beyond my control) at Psycarnival in Barcelona. The event is a monthly, put on by the Encela 42 crew, who always have great nights. I have in fact played there before, with vj baby k and solo, but of course I didn’t mention it here because I lost the damn password. Needless to say, the night was amazing and a fantastic group of people had a great time, myself included.

So what’s next? Well, I made  new track with Mechanimal (Nick Sagar-House) which will be available on release soon. We are just hunting for the best label. With any luck there will be another collaberation before I set out on my own in a brand new studio. But who knows, you know how us psytrance people are. Anyway, here is a tiny snippet. I can’t offer any more as labels really don’t want stuff out there until they have had a chance to sell it.

In May, I am off to an event in Portugal, where baby k will be showcasing her newly sharpened projection mapping talents. I won’t be playing there, just dancing. Of course, it is often great to just enjoy the tunes rather than thinking about what to play next. But as this is a monthly event put on by a legendary psy pioneer, I’ll eventually be on the line-up. Stay tuned here as I’ll be letting anyone who cares to know  about upcoming events. In the mean time maybe I’ll see you on the dancefloor at  The Magical Formula.

cohesionComing up in September is another great Cohesion Adventure. The last edition was packed out, full of happy faces all over the place. This time they are doing a special edition, including Progressive Style psy-trance. For the first time at Cohesion you can catch CIMI. It’s that wicked progressive trance played at underground clubs and squat parties in London – deep and driving, techy and atmospheric. IAlso at this event, Nutreno is back from the Babies events, playing South African style Progressive. Also for the first time at Cohesion Drumbaza plays a 40 min Live drumming show. 3 Days Of Shopping For Music

handWoo Hoo…. 28 new tracks, that has to be a record. I often find it very hard to discover cranking tunes that are both uplifting and cheese free. But after a marathon three days I have a pretty nice collection, and just in time for Funny Moon Festival. Tracks by Liftshift, Digicult, Tropical Bleyage, Avalon and Circuit Breakers. And that’s just a few.
Really looking forward to spending the rest of today on the decks playing around with both new stuff and old. I also found a CD in my case that turned out to be re-mixes and originals by Champa… And they totally rock
All in all a pretty succesful shop.

Not As Fun As A Record Shop

It’s that time again. Shopping for new music has to be one of my least favourite things to do. Well, of course it is fantastic when you find a gem, but sifting through the masses of very average (or worse) music out there these days is often more a chore than and adventure. Times have changed and sitting in front of a computer sifting through it all is simply not that much fun.

record+shop+2I do miss the days of going to the record store. You would run into other DJ’s you knew, even if they played a totally different style of music, and there was a sort of sense of community there. The guy behind the counter that knew you would often have a couple of disks stashed for you because he knew you would want to hear them first and they had maybe only 2 copies.

Of course, vinyl has become too expensive to produce for most psytrance, but since digital has taken over, there is now an endless supply of very average stuff flooding the market. Not just psy… but everything.

But there is some great stuff out there. I’ll spend the next few days completely immersed in searching, often getting grumpy after listening to samples of 200 tracks and finding 4 or 5 great ones. Ok, yeah, so I am picky. But I don’t like to play stuff that doesn’t totally rock.

Funny Moon Festival 2013 is just 12 days away, so I must stop writing this and get busy. I’ll update some of the choice stuff I find in a week or so.

What I Do

First a DJ & Producer, Second an Events Decorator.

Can’t really say one’s a Passion, the other’s a Job.
One because I’ve been fortunate enough to do both very well since Pre-2000, and Two because my Manager will kill me if it means I slack or flag on one or the other.  Lately though, events decoration has taken a backseat as DJing and promoting have become more full-on.

I’m based in London right now but still doing projects in Asia.  For completely Insane decorations or DJ Bookings Text +44 (0) 7952 412 168 (UK) ::

Decor

When I started doing events in Barcelona way back in 1997, I got seriously involved in doing the decor for the parties. It was my first foray into doing decor and had no idea what I was doing at all. When I moved to Ibiza the following year, I had the chance to do decor for a few of the major event promoters. It was a hell of a learning experience. They had budget for decor that would put a small country to shame.

zen club sydney australia ceilingsWhen I started doing events in Sydney, that’s when I really got a chance to do things my way. I had (and always have had) some crazy ideas on what would look good inside a club or event. My first events, Bindi Bender and Deep Water with the Energy Emperors in Sydney gave me the chance to explore possibilities with decor. But when I did my first Chemistry event I felt I really had achieved what i as looking to do.
