Building a Studio

pexels-photo-164938Wow, just the thought of it is daunting. Not just for the massive amount of cash one requires for such an undertking, but also the logistics and set-up. I am very lucky that my friend (and ace producer) Nick is going to help me. This will be a multi purpose space, used not only by myself but also my kid, the talanted musician Liam Cloud. Vj baby k will also be busy editing visuals here. Keep your eyes open for her crazy stuff.

I have always wanted a space to create music and it is actually the only logical next step. I certainly have enough tunes in my head to keep me busy for quite some time. The drama has always been money and head-space, of which there is never enough.

apollo_twin_carousel_1But where in the hell do you start, right? I mean I suppose one could try the ‘trial and error’ method, but you would need a ton of time and bags of cash. I, as I mentioned before, am lucky enough to have guidence from the artist known as Mechanimal.

The wish list of what to buy is huge, limited I suppose only by wallet girth. But the first piece of kit I am getting is the Apollo Twin soundcard. Apollo make great stuff that range in between 500 and 2500 Euros, but this little baby will do what I need and registers at only around 900 Euros. It also has inputs for guitars and mics, solving the ‘how do you record rock music’ question straight away.

I’ll be posting about a lot of the stuff that I’ll be getting for this studio, so if it helps anyone in any way, that’s great. After all, I’m not doing this alone. Your soudcard (and monitors) are really important, so don’t skimp

Been a while…

16836076_10212672635596228_2508038325001866122_oWell it certainly has been a while since I spent any time promoting this page. But then again, I had not been playing out and about all that much due to several brain operations and a bit of drama walking in a straight line (which can still present a few problems after wine). That and the fact that I forgot my own login to pan.dj. I suppose I should have just asked Kristina (the lovely vj baby K) which is what I finally ended up doing.

But hey, enough about the past, get ready for the future. I am 100% back and ready to make people dance like no one’s watching. Just last weekend I played the 3-4:30 set (ok it went on till about 5 due to reasons beyond my control) at Psycarnival in Barcelona. The event is a monthly, put on by the Encela 42 crew, who always have great nights. I have in fact played there before, with vj baby k and solo, but of course I didn’t mention it here because I lost the damn password. Needless to say, the night was amazing and a fantastic group of people had a great time, myself included.

So what’s next? Well, I made  new track with Mechanimal (Nick Sagar-House) which will be available on release soon. We are just hunting for the best label. With any luck there will be another collaberation before I set out on my own in a brand new studio. But who knows, you know how us psytrance people are. Anyway, here is a tiny snippet. I can’t offer any more as labels really don’t want stuff out there until they have had a chance to sell it.

In May, I am off to an event in Portugal, where baby k will be showcasing her newly sharpened projection mapping talents. I won’t be playing there, just dancing. Of course, it is often great to just enjoy the tunes rather than thinking about what to play next. But as this is a monthly event put on by a legendary psy pioneer, I’ll eventually be on the line-up. Stay tuned here as I’ll be letting anyone who cares to know  about upcoming events. In the mean time maybe I’ll see you on the dancefloor at  The Magical Formula.

Funny Moon Festival Review

It has been a week since we got back from Funny Moon Festival. For all you festival goers, most of you will know that the minimum recovery time is about that long. With the complete lack of decent REM sleep, odd hours of dining, and dancing until the sun comes up…. Even with ear plugs the bass is always with you. You dream in psy.

rabbit holeThis years Funny Moon was the best ever (so far, just wait until next year). The music was solid and danceable throughout, the decor and the vibe was un-parelleled. From the moment you entered the grounds at the castle, it was all uphill. Ok, both literally and figuratively. The info both was staffed by the lovely Robin and Melina, always there with a smile and whatever you needed.  Across a big open space of grass and you would wind up at the chill area. Food, drinks, laid back tunes (on a wicked system) and loads to look at. The decor was fantastic. A great place to stop and relax before the climb to the main stage. The crazy Italians provided food and coffee… there were loads of choices of cool stuff to eat, drink or buy to wear.

It was up at the top of the hill, either trough the Funny Forest (amazing at night) or around the bend where the alien landing strip was laid out. With a big open dance floor covered in wicked decor, ample room to dance away, fantastic sound system and a wicked main stage. The bar was well stocked, and without massive lines of people. I really loved both my Thursday night set and my Saturday evening set with Baby K as Alternate Reality.

This festival will be even bigger next year, and the people who go to this event are what make it so special. Everyone smiles all the time, no troubles, no dramas, no attitude. Keep and eye open for next years event, you will  not want to miss it. A huge thank you to everyone involved, and we will see you next year for the wedding.

3 Days Of Shopping For Music

handWoo Hoo…. 28 new tracks, that has to be a record. I often find it very hard to discover cranking tunes that are both uplifting and cheese free. But after a marathon three days I have a pretty nice collection, and just in time for Funny Moon Festival. Tracks by Liftshift, Digicult, Tropical Bleyage, Avalon and Circuit Breakers. And that’s just a few.
Really looking forward to spending the rest of today on the decks playing around with both new stuff and old. I also found a CD in my case that turned out to be re-mixes and originals by Champa… And they totally rock
All in all a pretty succesful shop.

Funny Moon Festival 2013 Line-up

The official line-up has been released at Funny Moon. VJ Baby K has been talking to tech people organizing projectors and visuals. The site is coming together. The weather is set to be beautiful for this years festival. (Everyone remembers the rain of 2011)

And best of all, the crew and all the lovely people will be out in force.

I have 2 sets. One on Thursday at the start of the event. A little more on the progressive side but still driving and uplifting. And on Saturday night at 10pm with VJ Baby K as Alternate Reality. This one Full-on and uplifting. I do hope to see you there. Come and say hello, ask for a free DVD or CD.

Not As Fun As A Record Shop

It’s that time again. Shopping for new music has to be one of my least favourite things to do. Well, of course it is fantastic when you find a gem, but sifting through the masses of very average (or worse) music out there these days is often more a chore than and adventure. Times have changed and sitting in front of a computer sifting through it all is simply not that much fun.

record+shop+2I do miss the days of going to the record store. You would run into other DJ’s you knew, even if they played a totally different style of music, and there was a sort of sense of community there. The guy behind the counter that knew you would often have a couple of disks stashed for you because he knew you would want to hear them first and they had maybe only 2 copies.

Of course, vinyl has become too expensive to produce for most psytrance, but since digital has taken over, there is now an endless supply of very average stuff flooding the market. Not just psy… but everything.

But there is some great stuff out there. I’ll spend the next few days completely immersed in searching, often getting grumpy after listening to samples of 200 tracks and finding 4 or 5 great ones. Ok, yeah, so I am picky. But I don’t like to play stuff that doesn’t totally rock.

Funny Moon Festival 2013 is just 12 days away, so I must stop writing this and get busy. I’ll update some of the choice stuff I find in a week or so.

Funny Moon Festival Update

The site

The site

It’s less than a month away now. I am looking forward to this event in a very big way. Alternate Reality will be playing (that’s VJ Baby K and I) as well as a host of other great dj’s and live acts. You can find out more about us as a DJ/VJ team here. It starts on the 11th of July and for 4 straight days you’ll hear some amazing psytrance and meet some fantastic people. And of course enjoy Baby K’s amazing visuals.

I have been in touch with the promoter, and the site looks amazing. There is a 18th century castle on the site. There is an outstanding camping area and loads of parking. There will be a chill out area with food stalls and clothing shops. The main stage will feature, as always, amazing decor, but this year there is also a laser show as well as Baby k’s twisted visuals. The weather has been great, with days in the high 20’s (that’s like 85 if you are not a celsius fan), the open fields are dry and perfect for camping.

There will be fire and bubble workshops with lots to do if you want to get away from the music for just a bit. If you ever need any help, you’ll find an info point in the castle garden nestled among the 18th century statues.

lThe site is compact and easy to get around. No 45 minute walks between venues, the bar and the food. Of course the jewel on the crown of Funny Moon is the people who go to this festival. I have never met a nicer crowd of people at any event.

Entry is cheap at only 45 Euros for all days or Friday 40, Sat 35.
There are even lower prices for Eastern Europeans (Cz,Sk,H,Rom) 30-euros (for all days) Friday 25, Sat 20. But you’ll need to show ID or passport. The promoter is just keeping it fair to those that can afford more.

The forests

The forests

Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one. No mater if you are out and about traveling or on the summer festival trail, make plans now. It’s not hard to get to either. Driving is the easiest way. From Vienna take the E59 toward Jihlava then Autobahn 1 towards Prague Exit #10 on E50 – Direction Plzen… Exit #26 on E48 direction Karlovy Vary, Exit 20km before Karlovy vary on the right side – Libkovice / Valic, take your First right- Next left – you are there.

If you want to get there on public transport, you’ll need to get a train or bus to Karlovy Vary in Czech, and get a taxi from there, which should cost less than £2o. Just tell the driver you want to go to Valec. Trains and busses go from Germany, Pague and Vienna. Be sure to bring a tent, sun screen, something warm for the nights and lots of smiles.
